I was waiting to promote Uptake.com until I finished my first post there, which is finally done! Uptake is a travel search and discovery engine founded by Yen Lee, a former general manager of Yahoo! Here is more about Uptake from a press release that went out last week:

"In just six months since its public beta launch in May of this year, UpTake’s travel search and discovery engine has grown exponentially.  The travel industry’s deepest and broadest database of hotels and attractions has surpassed all other online travel search engines in terms of indexed sources, products, and opinions.  With this announcement, significant new industry partnerships and $10 million in new funding secured, UpTake is thriving and growing in an economy in which many start-ups are struggling.

Since its public beta in May 2008, UpTake’s search engine has increased its total number of indexed sources from 1,000 to 5,000 making its database of individual travel sites nearly 10 times greater than any other travel search engine.  The sources indexed by UpTake include trusted sites like Expedia, Fodor’s, goCityKids, TripAdvisor, Virtual Tourist and Yahoo! Travel."

The largest travel search engine! Pretty cool. Also pretty cool is that one of my blog friends, Whit Honea , asked me if I wanted to write (and post my own photos) on the Vacations Blog. Whit is the Travel Editor for Uptake and some of you may remember him from the first Interviews from the Daddyshack column I wrote at Quirkee.com . I am honored to have been asked to write about vacation destinations in Texas for Uptake! I was told the money wasn't going to be something I could retire on, but with traffic bonuses I have a shot at a sweet spot on a beach in Mexico swinging in a hammock and sipping margaritas by the time I turn fifty. (hint: spread the word about Uptake and click on my posts there!)

So without further adieu, here is my first post at Uptake.com about Zilker Park here in Austin. After reading my post go check out the other bloggers and leave some comment love!

Goodbye My Love...

I'm really going to miss you. I wish we could have worked it out. We tried and tried to make it happen but in the end it just wasn't a good thing to stay together.

You were always very good to me and I will never forget you. Your style and grace will remain burned in my heart for all of eternity. You were very good to our kids and kept them safe, happy, and secure just by your natural qualities that only you could provide. I could always trust you to do the right thing by us. It breaks my heart that you are leaving but I know I will be OK in the end. Having you in my life made me a better person, a stronger man, a more loving friend.

Life will be so much different without you but I think in a way it will be better. It's really hard for me to say goodbye, but it is for the best no matter what other people say. They know how much I love you and will eventually see that splitting up was the right thing to do.

I'll forever keep a special place in my heart for you. I wish you all the best in your new life and hope whomever you end up with will treat you like the beauty that you are.

Love,

James

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!

A group of Texas members from the NSOP (New School of Photography) forum met in College Station to shoot one of another member's motorcycle races. Ted is a guy I grew up with in Dallas. He took 1st place in his last race of the season. Congrats Ted!

"Awww man! I have to race Ted?"

Wheeeeeeelie!

He looks embarrassed following her on that tiny bike

Barack Obama Wins!

Today on the way home from kindergarten my son and I had this conversation...

Little Mr.: We voted for President today at school.

Me: You did? Cool!

Little Mr.: Yea, and Rock Obama won. I was right!

Me: Barack Obama?

Little Mr: Yep, I voted for Rock Obama.

Me: How did you know who to vote for?

Little Mr.: My brain told me.

Me: You have a good brain. Did you talk about the candidates? Barack Obama and John McCain?

Little Mr.:  No

Me: Then how did you decide to vote for Barack Obama instead of John McCain?

Little Mr.: He wasn't on the list. It was Rock Obama and George Washington.

Me: Oh, that's funny. So you voted for Obama because George Washington is not alive anymore?

Little Mr.: They are both alive.

Me: Washington was the first President of the United States. He's not around anymore. That was over 200 years ago.

Little Mr: Oh.

Me: So John McCain wasn't a choice for you to vote for?

Little Mr.: Nope. I voted for Rock Obama and he won!

Me: So you talked about the Presidents then?

Little Mr.: Yep.

Me: Which ones?

Little Mr.: George Washington, Barack Obama...

Me: (laughing) Well, he probably will be President after the adults get to vote in a couple of weeks.

Little Mr.: He is President! He won!

Me: (laughing)

You heard it here first, people! Rock Obama wins!

I'm pretty sure that's not how it all really happened at school today. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if a liberal town like Austin left John McCain off of the kindergarten ballot!
